When Mary Russell meets Holmes, she is 15 and he is 54, they form an instantaneous friendship which soon becomes a partnership as he teaches her the art of detecting.

Mary Russell is a quirky intelligent woman who can hold her own with a man renowned for his contempt for other people’s thought processes.

In this novel, King presents the first meeting between fifteen-year-old Mary Russell, the young Jewish-American protagonist of King’s series by that name, and Sherlock Holmes. Their meeting leads to a collaboration between the two, though this first novel focuses primarily on the detective training that Holmes gives to Russell.
